    fake keyboard?

My PC wont boot without a keyboard being attached (its an OLD PC!), one of those with a large round keyboard plug.

I don't want to have a keyboard attached to it so is there any way to make the machine think its got one when it hasn't?

I'm prepared to cut up / modify the keyboard cable to accomplish this.

I dont know what model the motherboard is because I cant get the hard drive bracket off! The buggers have spot welded it in place.

By cutting up or modifying the keyboard, you still 'effectively' have a keyboard stil there. So it's the same thing as having the real keyboard there.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Why do you want the PC to boot up without a keyboard?

See if you can disable the port(COM) from the bios of your M/B.

I'm trying to keep weight down to a minimum. I'd be happy if the keyboard port just had a plug in it to fool the stupid hunk of crap into thinking it had a keyboard (IE, no cable and no actual flat thing with lots of buttons on it, just the modified plug.)

If you really must know its a robot, i'm controlling the motors via the LPT and its got a few sensors feeding data into the serial port. its just a motherboard sitting on top of an actuator kit (wheels and a chassis). It's got to be light and fast. Works OK as long as I walk around behind it carrying the keyboard, but I cant run fast enough to keep up at times. It hangs when I unplug the keyboard (I reckon its static or something).

Do you reckon if I ripped up a keyboard (& chop off the key connections) and take out the CMOS controller plug that in, that'd work?

Currently running Dos 6.22 and Qbasic as the brain.
I don't live here any more.

Go into the BIOS, you should be able to turn off the need for a keyboard.

    Like...

    Halt on all errors

    Should be:

Halt on all errors except keyboard.

BIOS are different though, so look, read, and may luck be with you!

My bios doesn't have an "I Eat Cake" setting.

I've solved the problem though. Just soldered a cap in a strategic place.

Yeah, but it doesn't have that option either, the bios was an updated version and wasn't particularly well suited to the machine.

Mendhak, it still smarts a bit, but its stopped the static bounce when I pull out the keyboard cable. Works a beaut now though.

I've got QBasic to write a performance report to a flash card...

Top speed so far 30.1kph and it flips over when it hits the brakes / goes round corners etc...

    Roll cage required methinks.
