General Programming Question Please have a look and let me know your thoughts

I have 8mths experience in vb6/sql7 programming
and want to really get into web development.
i know the basics of html and asp.
used dreamweaver a few times
but thats about it really.
so im after some tips as to where i should start??
as there are alot of different paths i can go down.
i want to be able to develop applications on the web
with SQL7 database access.but dont know where i should start
any ideas guys

Find some hosting with SQL and start a web site.

Try to get some kind of internship with a company that doesn't mind someone with little experience.

Maybe check out things like elance where you can bid on projects that will use your skills.
