Problem while Defragmenting windows. Pls help

Problem while Defragmenting windows. Pls help.

The defragmentation keeps on restarting all the time with the message that the Drives Content changed and the defragment will restart.

I have even tried closing all the running application including norton antivirus etc so that it will not interfere with the defragment but stiill the same message appears. And the defragment never completes and it get restarted over and over again?

Please help me how to avoid this problem
    Thank you

    RE:

This happens because a file has been written to the drive whilst defrag is
running, usually the result of another application running at the same time.
Make sure all aplications are closed (including any that automatically load
on boot up (for example programs in the start up folder), You may need to
boot in safe mode if you have programs loaded by the registry etc.
Occasionally defrag itself or the registry will cause a restart, but this
    should not happen very often.

Please help in defragmenting. Thank you

Hi there I have tried doing all that. I mean I've deleted the items from the startup menu in windows and also I have closed all the applications that are runnig to avoid conflict with it but still I get the message as: "The
Drive contents changed and restarting defragment"

What shall I do to avoid this.

Just to remind you that I have Win98.
    Thank you

Try to enter windows in safe mode, or waht it is called. Then no applications will be started...

Yes there is. With NTFS the gains arent obvious (if any), but with FAT32 it noticeably speeds up disk access.

in Windows 98 it can make a HUGE difference (much more so than with other operating systems that use FAT32 disks)

it not only moves files into contiguous blocks, but also positions them so that the most frequently used are on the fastest parts of the disk. The performance gain from this (if it hasn't been done recently) can mean that the computer runs 30-40% faster than before defragging

That's what I thought when I first heard it, but I have seen it happen several times.

Ok, so it only works for the programs & files you use most often, but surely that is what's important?

Check your power options and screensaver, if these activate they cause it to restart. Diskeeper is a better alternative, i use it all the time, works great and defrags quicker and more efficiently than windows and best of all, it doesn't restart when you access the HDD and you can apparently have it defragging while playing a game, not that i'd do that though, it'd slow it down.
