I often have this problem. Engineering applications are always in demand, mainly because its such a diverse field.

I work for a structural engineering department in the UK. And I've managed to make myself the head of a new programming section (yes, I know its a scary though for all those who know me!) there.

The sort of stuff I do is writing programs to calculate the loadings and beaking strains of various materials under certain conditions. This could be applied anywhere from a child's swing to a 100m suspension bridge.

These programs are quite complex and involve various tasks like interpolating / extrapolating data tables, simultaneous screen/file/printer stream reporting, polynomial integration and differentiation.

The department already has software to do all this but it costs about £1000 per lisence per year to run it! My software costs them nothing (apart from my salary of course). Plus it's more specific to what the department does.

-Artificial Intelligence (recommended)
-Pattern Recognition
-System Simulation

Just some ideas similar to the paths that I've taken in the last few years.
