Reasons against Lotus Notes
Hello,
I have written a system in VB / SQL server for my company. I work for the Europe division. The parent US company wants a single application rolled out globally to all divisions (US, Europe and Asia).
We are lobbying that our system is the one which is rolled out. HOWEVER, the US seems to like the idea of developing the same application using Lotus Notes. This is because it is already a company standard application and no extra licences would have to be bought unlike running a VB / SQL application.
We have to convince the US that developing in Notes is a bad idea and that our application would be a more viable option.
In a way I need to hype up our application and produce reasons against Lotus Notes development. This is where I need your help.
I need some hard reasons against Notes. Such as scalability of the database, security, development speed etc.
If anyone has any credible reasons not to use Notes, please post. Even if you only have one reason, post it so I can complie them.
Thankyou!

I had to use Lotus Notes in my previous job, and you will admit, it is secure. However, I found it to be horribly slow, clunky and error prone.
The worst part was the enormous size of the "databases", and replicating. You do so much as to move to a different machine, and BAM... replicate the whole ****load again.
Next, it's not that easy to configure.
It'd be good for your app if you could convince them that it's more secure, and easier to configure than LN.
I'll think of a few more points and get back here later. You're bringing back bitter memories of LN

Lotus Notes is typically focussed on document discussions - rather than full database applications. The entries in the database are different. If you are entering documents in a big way into the DB, then Notes might be better. Otherwise, if the DB holds normal data (names, addresses, numbers, values, data) then a proper SQL server app is much better.
Wokawidget also had some choice words about Notes earlier this year!

We use here at work.. I must say IT SUCKS! It crashes alot, when it crashes you almost certinly will have to re-boot to get it to load up again, it is slow. It messes with attachemtns if they come form outlook and they are not sent using plain text, ... So much bad stuff...
On a good note, Most viruses are written for outlook.. so it is better for security. I know that is one of the main reasons we use it.
Good luck

10 different ways to skin a cat and amazingly enough each and every one has the same result, the cat gets skinned! The same can be applied to code, so be nice and accept each others "preferences".
