    Your Input on PhP

I have been "trying" to learn ASP.NET therefore I have been looking for a way to connect to a MySQL database for about a week now using VB.... This is either a) impossible or b) hidden code that cannot be explained due to some undergound ASP terrorist network that might destroy the world...

This has caused me MUCH grief and MANY wasted hours...

Therefore I am VERY tempted to learn PhP.... Would someone or a few people explain the benefits of doing so? Please no "Because ASP.NET SUXORZ" messages...

    Thanks in advance,

    Anjari

    PHP is free, and easy.

    It comes with MySQL 'compatibility'.

    'Nuff said.

Don't doubt ASP.Net too much, I know there are some companies out there paying a pretty penny for ASP.Net jobs on a contract basis.

That's not fair. He provided three valid reasons.

For you ASP.Net issue, you probably need MyODBC, the ODBC driver for MySQL. It doesn't work too well though, so it's a poor option.

PHP is a wide-spread, cross-platform, easy and free web scripting language. It comes with an incredible amount of built-in or easily addable functions to do just about anything you can think of. It features limited OOP (better in PHP 5), session management, on-the-fly code creation (via eval()) and a few other nice things.

ASP.Net on the other hand is a compiled, fully OOP, medium-skill, Windows-only (except for the slowly advancing Mono project) and proprietary web application language which is actually designed for large projects. Though the same is said about JSP, which I find unfair.

But the bottom line is, it's far easier to use a MySQL database from PHP than from ASP.Net. Partly because PHP and MySQL work so well together, partly because ADO.Net is specialized in MS SQL Server and Jet DB (Access).

What were you expecting? A documentary? My reasons were given perfectly well in response to your situation.

What kind of answer were you expecting?

"PHP, while quickly processing your ideas and coding everything for you, gives you orgasmic bliss while you watch your work completed before your eyes."

You were already given the best answers there are, and if they weren't good enough for you, there's an ASP forum up the hill.

PHP is an extremely easy language to learn also, I became quite proficient with it in only a couple of weeks.
