Badwidth, websites, and such.
Okay, there's this other message board place and the owner has disallowed people to use the [img] tag because he says images use up too much bandwidth. However, he never allowed uploads, so the only way one could use the [img] tag would be to link it to files on others servers.
I told him that this would use up the other servers bandwidth, and would have no effect on his, since his server would just send the HTML to the browser and the browser would then request the images from the server (whever it may be).
This isn't a computer message board, so it's not like there's a bunch of computer science people running around.
All the members (and the owner) ganged up on me calling me wrong and stupid, and threatened to ban me because I questioned the rules.
So what I want to know is, am I wrong? Is this how it works?

This is more of a general discussion rather than a feedback question, but that's okay.
You actually are trying to get around their rules. Even if it doesn't add to their bandwidth, the result is that they could end up having to explain to others how you were able to do an image and they were not.
To answer your question, I believe you are correct. My understanding is that a file is sent from the machine it is located on and uses that machine (err domain's) bandwidth.

The only extra bandwidth that the forum in question would be using would be that extra length of HTML code required to display an image - which, especially if the webserver is using compression, is next to nothing.

Hey, did I post this in Forum Feedback? I thought I put it in General PC
Feel free to move it where it belongs, Brad. Wasn't exactly sure where to post it and I definitly didn't mean to put it here.

Yup, you're right. It's called hotlinking, and perhaps you should give him this link which explains what it is.
MAYBE they'll understand.

Those guys are idiots. I don't see how someone like that can run a message board. Me thinks their server and/or board software is VERY vulnerable to exploits.
