Quick Question!!

I have noticed that in the last year there was a lot of talk about VB.net, It sounds like People are saying that it is easier to use than VB6.
All that talk brings me to these Questions.
Here goes!
1st: Can I buy a copy of VB.net as a stand alone App.?
2nd: Is the environment the same as in VB ?
3rd: Is the code something like C (I have heard that) If not then how does it differ from VB6 ?
4th: What would the advantage be if I decided to switch, I’m new to Programming and I can find all kinds of info on VB6 but not on VB.net (or maybe I don’t know where to look)
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could take the time to answer me.

Yes , VB.NET Standard Edition.

Much more interesting . A lot of tools integrated into one IDE (SQL Explorer , Help ..etc I can't tell all of them).

No , maybe he means C# which is derived from C & C++ . Some keywords been omitted , some added . You need a link dude .

4th: What would the advantage be if I decided to switch ?
VB6 will be dead soon . MS started already in implementing .NET Platform . It's the next generation of OS . If you want to make advantage of this , you have to program in any .NET language (C++, C# , VB) .NET . I know I left behind a lot but this maybe pushed me to switch .

Don't burn them just yet. There are A LOT of vb6 apps out there that still need supported and won't be going away anytime soon.

Just for the record, C# programmers get paid a lot more than vb.net programmers, and it isn't that hard to pick up if you know the framework (which you would learn by doing vb.net). All you have to do is learn a new syntax (IE loops, conditional statements, and minor other things). Also by learning C# along with VB.Net, you have twice the examples available to you online.

OK! One more Question then, being that I’m new to programming and really don’t have a clue, is there any sense in me even continuing to learn VB6? Keeping in mind that I’m not that far along with it yet. “I’m entry level” I’m using “Paul Sheriff teaches VB6” and also the VB6 Bible. I have created some very basic programs and just started to step into databases.
PS: I don’t do this for a living “yet”

Don't waste your time and start learning VB.NET .

i was pretty much in ur situation. i learned vb 6 from lippincott's book, pathetic basics if i may add. anyways, quitting vb 6 is a very obvious decision, u will realize that when starting with vb.net. i am still a beginner at vb.net but i surely know more than the "pathetic basics" and the system rulez, only con right now is that a good deal of ppl cannot run these apps unless their windows is up to date(need a twenty-something mb framework at least). yet by the time u/i master .net probably every single computer in the world would have the framework ready installed.

It's a pity true . This seems to happen in the future of this product I guess . Add to your knowledge , MS is planning to release new versions on 2004 , 2005 and you count the rest . Who knows what's next !
