VB6 and XP [RESOLVED]

I have recently purchased a new computer, with Microsoft Windows XP installed on it.

I have tried to install my Visual Basic, Version 6.0, working copy that came on a CD with my copy of “Sams' Teach Yourself Visual Basic in 24 Hours”, 1998, with no success. Before it does any installation, I get the error message, “SETUP.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” Does anyone have a solution for my case?

Hmmm. What version of VB do you have?

You might also try it in safe mode. Who knows? Maybe some other process is somehow screwing it up.

Oh, btw, VB installed great on my XP machine, so it is possible.

Edit: By version I mean Enterprise, Student, Professional(?), etc.

There should be no prob w/ VB6 and XP. Your posting reads like your VB edition is by Sams, or have iI got that one wrong?

The original MS CD should work fine in any case. STH wrong with the CD (dirty, scratch) or the drive? I know, sounds stupid but often it's the small things causing the big headache...

Jemidiah, I bought the book, "SAMS Teach Yourself Visual Basic 6 in 24 Hours", by Greg Perry and Sanjaya Hettihewa, Copyright1998 by Sams Publishing, which comes with a CD that contains, among many other other files, these from Microsoft:
Internet Explorer 4 for Windows 95/NT 4 (Service Pack 3 required)
Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Edition

I had successfully installed it on my previous computer, with Windows 98 and IE 5.0, and used it a few times, just before lightning struck very near to my home and "fried" the mother board. I bought a new computer, which came with Windows XP. I successfully installed my old QuickBASIC 4.5, as well as the Microsoft Office 97 suite but, when I tried to install VB from the CD, I keep getting that error message, "Setup.exe has encountered a problem, etc.", and that's as far as I can get!

I will presently try to do the installation from the safe screen, thank you for the idea. I am ready to try anything that looks plausible!

As to the VB Edition, I guess it would be of the lowest order, Student, I would think.

Vicros, I agree, "there should be no problem w/ VB6 and XP", seeing that others have had no problem. Maybe I have VB5 (see above, in my response to Jemidiah), and that is the cause of my problem? I also notice that IE 4 for Windows 95 and NT is included on the CD. Could that be the problem? I have IE 6 installed on my new computer.

Now, the book, on page 2, reads, "As long as you have the hardware to install both Windows 95/98 (or Windows NT) and Visual Basic 6, you have everything you need to use this book and to learn Visual Basic programming." From that, I would think that the CD would have some version of VB6, but, I don't really know, at this time. If I could find somebody else that has this Sams CD and XP, maybe I would find out what to do?

Thank you, dis1411 (what a strange name!), for your kind reply, with the link to Microsoft's downloads. I went there and tried to download the Visual Basic 5 Control Creation Edition. Alas!, I tried about ten times, and always got the infamous white background screen with the message that the site might be busy, etc., and gave up, at least until after I tried Jemidiah's suggestion, below.

Jemidiah, your suggestion to start in Safe Mode, and try to load then, WORKED! So, many thanks to you, I can now return to using it once more

You could have also tried running setup.exe in compatibility mode. I have the same book-the version of VB6 on that book's CD is the working model version.
