    Import old Outlook Express emails ?

    I had a guy in here with a ****ed up installation of windows, and instead of fixing it, I managed to flog him a new hard drive and install windows on that drive.

    So basically he has a perfect installation of windows 2000, and a separate hard drive with a badly corrupted version of windows 2000.
    Now, on that old drive, he was using outlook express.
    He wants to know how can he import his old emails into the OE on the new OS.

    I'm not sure how though ...

    if they are kept on the server (like mine are now) you can just set up the connection to it & OE will download them all again.

    if not... the easiest way would be to export them from the old version to a file, then copy the file to the new drive & import.

    if that isn't possible then you'll have to follow the impressively long instructions at the MS web site

    It's pretty easy...you drag them out of OE into a folder (literally), stick the HDD in the new PC, open up OE and the folder, and drag them all into OE again. At least, that's the way I do it

    si: I'm afraid they're all stored somewhere on the drive - not on a server.

    cyber: I really dont want to bring the customer back in, swap around the drives, boot up the corrupted windows, export the data, swap the drives again, boot up the good windows, and import the data.


    Is there no way of grabbing the data as it is ...

    I think there is.. but you'll have to search for instructions on the MS web site - I did something similar a few years ago, too long to remember anything about it i'm afraid!

    Search his corrupted hard drive for .dbx files. There will be a number of them. Copy them to a location on his new drive and then import them through Outlook Express. If Outlook doesn't give you the option to import .dbx files, you may need to search for the location of the .dbx files on his new outlook installation and then replace them with the old .dbx files.
