Windows NTFS file system

Hi,

I have three partiation of my 40GB Hard Disk.
C:=10GB, D:=20GB and E:10GB (roughly)

I am using Dual booting (Win98 and Win XP).
On primary partiation (C: ) I am using Windows 98 and
on secondary partiation (D: ) I am using Windows XP with VB.net

Now want to change change my Windows XP drive (D: ) to NTFS file system of Windows to use Rights/Permissions for folders and files.

1) Is Reinstallation of VB.net is required ?
2) Is my data (VB.net projects or other internet cokkies) will be saved ?
3) Will dual booting work ? If yes, Windows 98 support it ?

For your questions:
1- No, reinstallation is not required.
2- Your data will remain intact
3- You can still use dual boot, but win98 wont recognize your D drive and so the drive letters will change ( i am not 100% sure of this) and your E drive will become D in win98.

But
According to MS:
Volumes converted from FAT to NTFS lack some performance benefits compared to volumes initially formatted with NTFS. On converted volumes, the MFT might become fragmented. In addition, on converted boot volumes, NTFS permissions are not applied after the volume is converted.

However once i tested and i was able to apply permissions. Anyway I recommend you to go to Help of windows XP and search for Convert NTFS and read the comments carefully before moving on.

Installing Win98 on FAT32 on the first partition and NTFS OS on the second partition would make use of dual booting . After conversion , no drive letter will be changed . I'm sure of this since I've tried it many times .Like this :

Convert D:\FS :NTFS

I am sure that it wont be changed in Windows XP , but you mean that in Win98 he will have C and E drives and no D drive? or E will change to D?

He'll get C and D , Why E ? E letter probably already reserved to CD drive .

Because in the begining he had his hard disk partitioned as C,D, and E. Now if D is changed to NTFS he will have C and D (in win 98) and the current D is the old E. I dont know if Win98 is smart enough to update the shortcuts from E to D.

If he used Partition Magic , there is a map drive wizard that does update his files and shortcut-based apps to the new drive letter . This also exists in XP (under disk managment ) .
