Why do we need so many ads?
I mean we have a ton of members. If each one donated like $5 instead of these stupid ads could we get rid of them?

You're certainly generous with my money!
How would you impliment this?
If they're donations, then they're voluntary, and so VBF might or might not get anything. I doubt it'd make sense to halt all adds, in the hope of getting donations.
BTW, how often should these donations occur?

Just let VBF have a little PayPal sign at the bottom. People are encouraged to donate whenever. I mean some of these damn ads will go away if we get something like that.

Well JupiterMedia did pay a considerable amount of money for the VBWorld network - so how else are they going to make their money back if they don't use ads ?
If VBF were to be running at a loss, then I would imagine it would be a fairly quick decision to just dump the site. So I'm all for the ads personally

I think we should be thankful that we have a place to come(which is free) to discuss computer related stuff. Posting and reading posts in the forums on montley fool's site was one of my favorite things to do. Now you have to pay per month even to do that.

I am jealous of all of you who have this mountain of free time to worry about whether a website has ads or not.
Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Cry, and you just water down your vodka.
Take credit, not responsibility

It's because this forum has low traffic and is loaded with ads (or atleast I'm told, I never even see 1 ad, not even banner ads )
I made a post in chit chat asking the specs of this forum(size it uses up and how much bandwidth per month it uses)
Me thinks they are paying out of there ass for low bandwidth and I bet I could get them a WAY better deal OR I may even be able to host it.
They don't make an effort to contact me or anything about it, so they obviously don't give a flying ****. And yes, I posted this same thing in a reply about a week ago, and just recently made a thread on it.

I don't read chit chat. If you have a suggestion or a real question, my e-mail and PM address are easy enough to find. I don't recall getting either from you.
Jupitermedia has over a hundred Web sites and many, many forums. Bandwidth is not an issue and we are often upgrading servers to make sure the machines serve the need of the site. If a site gets slow response time, then the issue is generally quickly addressed. With the number of sites that Jupitermedia maintains, getting good deals for bandwidth and such is not an issue that I've heard come up. As a company we do millions and millions of page views a day.
As to size, I've always heard that size doesn't matter . Actually, it doesn't because disk space is cheap. This forum is primarily a mySQL database with a PHP type front-end. There isn't a lot of overhead in that type of a system.
As to your low traffic comment, that is a relative statement. I don't consider this site to be low traffic. I'm not sure what you are basing that comment on. Since I can see daily numbers of page views for this site and all Jupitermedia sites (if you want an idea of what those sites are, go to www.internet.com), I believe I can fairly state that this is a well travelled forum. Not everyone that comes here posts.
Web sites are a primary part of our business. Issues such as storage space and bandwidth are therefore a core part of doing business. I'm not sure what you (kasracer) are wanting or what your issue is; however, if you'd like to clarify, I'd be glad to hear.
Brad
>>> If you are curious, a better way to see a list of the Jupitermedia sites (many of them) is to go to www.internet.com/badurl. This gives a 404 error which lists the sites in groups. Our sites include Developer.com, CodeGuru, ASP101, 4GuysFromRolla, 15seconds, DevX, and many more that aren't so technical.

If you're willing to donate $5 every to these forums every once and awhile, then why don't you save up your money and buy a program that will block all ads?
Not only would this prevent you from seeing ads on vbForums, but every site on the internet.
Doesn't that seem like a far better solution?

Adsubtract Pro. That was a fantasic program. And very functional, removed banner ads, popups, cookies, javascript, even music playing in the background. Not sure where it is now, if it's still running. But if it is, I recommend it.

If bandwidth and storage is no problem, then what is with all of the ads? With the people I know, I'm almost 100% sure I could host this forum without any ads. But since JM is a huge internet "power" and has tons of space and bandwidth, then why the ads?

Because JM is a company, which means The employ people and must pay their wages. Also, since they are a company, it is most likely their goal to make money.
Not only that, but they purchased this website and the vbworld network, and I'm sure they'd like to make that that amount of money back.

Ads don't pay alot, I couldn't see that as helping them all that much. Especially when there are people like me who block all of the ads all together.
I know the person who runs www.oldversion.com, ad companies he is signed with brings him, maybe $100 a month on a VERY good month, usually it's way lower, even less than half that. If they are a real company, what exactly do they sell? I'm sure they have to be making money somehow, and I know ads arn't enough to pay for employees

His site says his rate is $1 per CPM, that means $100 would require 100,000 page views.
More importantly, to get an advertiser, your site needs to offer something others don't or needs to have a high-level of traffic that can be identified. This identified audience needs to then be related to the advertiser. Not meaning to pick on your friend's site, but I'd speculate that people looking for old versions of free software are not likely to be looking to buy many products. Thus, I can't think of many companies that would want to advertise there because the audience probably isn't interested in spending money.
Just a few thoughts.

I have no idea if they sell anything. But what makes you think a company has to sell things to be a company? They can offer services as well.
Providing a message board system, hosting, and moderation. Sounds like they're offering services to me.

Selling services, sell products, it all boils down to selling something. If you sell nothing, then how could you be a company?
Hosting, moderating a forum doesn't make a company. Hell that means I could be a company

Ohh, attitude, how funny.
You are trying to prove something. "I can save you money! You spend to much! Nah, nah!"
You have some goal in this other than making the forum ad free. If all you wanted was an ad free forum, you'd choose one of the many other ones.
So, again, what are you trying to prove?

I am reading your posts, Serial. I didn't say you were trying to prove something by asking what they do. I said you were trying to prove something in this whole "I can host it cheaper" routine.

One final post, then I'm closing this thread because a few of the messages are getting out of hand. If someone wants to continue the discussions, a new thread can be created.
As to what Jupitermedia does as a company....
I pulled this from www.jupitermedia.com. You'll see the company is in three parts. The online content portion (which is where VBForums falls) makes its money via advertising, subscriptions, and other standard online fee type services.
Online Content
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jupitermedia provides business professionals with the up-to-the-minute technology news, resources and product information that they need to do their jobs. Our internet.com and EarthWeb.com network consists of over 150 targeted Web sites and 200 e-mail newsletters serving vertical markets in the technology sector and serve over 20 million unique users each month.
Research Advisory and Consulting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jupiter Research helps companies develop, extend and integrate business strategies across online and emerging channels. Backed by proprietary data, Jupiter Research's industry-specific analysis, competitive insight and strategic advice give businesses the tools they need to exploit new technologies and business processes
Events and Conferences
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The events division of Jupitermedia produces targeted conferences and trade shows that bring together business buyers and sellers in their respective vertical technology markets. These events are closely linked to the communities served by our internet.com and EarthWeb.com network and provide the most focused and highest quality business audiences.
