    Benchmarker

The guys at work asked me to make a Benchmark tester. It would open word, excel, power point, measuing load times for large files (>100MB).

Should i try to do this or would vb.net create its own discrepencies?

    Thanks

You would want to do this in C++, VB will only make everything slightly slower, making the benchmarks not as useful

I could never open a 70 MB word file (exported from about 2000 pages of Crystal Reports report) On a P4 Intel 1800 with 256 M of RAM. What are you going to test?

    Oh, ok!
But do you think its a good idea to test servers with the time it takes for them to open a file?

    hmmm....

well we are implementing and testing a NAS solution. So i think opening files is one of the primary functions of the file servers.

the programs wont be running on the servers themselves, they'll be running on the clients.

what do you think i should test.

So you mean that its the client machines that will deal with files? Right? For sure the files the clients are trying to access wont be as large as 100M each unless you are dealing with large files like in a PACS system. So you should test something that really makes a difference, for example in a personal computer, more cpu and and RAM will help you to get faster access to hard disk up to an extent after which you face the hard drive specific limitations. As you know even the location of a file on the hard dirve changes its access time-sometimes dramatically. If i were in your shoes i would review all the servers specification and then decide what will make difference in performing the needed task and test that specific functionallity. Maybe the ability to open multiple files at once be more suitable in your situation than opening a large file.
