    Need help with an equation.

    Im pretty much stuck on this one. For some reason i cant' figure out how this equation should be factored. Thanks.

    x - 2(x +3) = 6
    x - 2x -6 = 6
    x - 2x -12 = 0
    As far as i get.........

    For instance some of these are quite easy.......

    -m2 = 8 - 9m
    0 = m2 -9m + 8
    (m-8)(m-1)
    m2 - m -8m + 8
    m2 - 9m + 8
    m = 8,1

    from this point:

    x - 2x -12 = 0

    ==> -x -12 = 0
    ==> -12 = x

    or, from right to left:
    ==> x = -12

    is this what you need?

    If you ment x^2 -2x -12, then try completing the square.

    x^2-2x=12
    x^2-2x+2=14
    (x-1)^2=14
    x=(+/-)SQRT(14)+1
    "Can't" and "shouldn't" are two totally separate things.

    All questions should be answered. All answers should be true. That is why I post.

    Yes exactly Lou I didn't think to solve that way. The whole chapter revolves around solving polynomial equations by factoring so i thought i was looking at the product of two binominals. Just as (m-8)(m-1) factored equals m2 -9m + 8.
