    XP on FAT32

My machine came out of the box running on XP with FAT32. Its performance is unacceptable for a 2.4 Ghz machine. My 500mhz machine on XP Pro (running a SQL and IIS web server) runs much faster.

I'm wondering if converting to NTFS will help out the performance. Here's some more information on my machine that might be pertinent to the performance.

    ROFLMAO!!! ^

    Uhm, got SDRAM in there?

    XP Home I'd bet. Ick.

    What's slow about it?

    You have UDMA enabled correct?

    What brand?

Some brands will install proprietary "crap" which can cause slowness.
Do you have any other software running?

XP seems to be love or hate.

I hated the interface and some of the dumbing down, but
we have it on a sony Vaio laptop and it runs crazy fast.
Boot up and shutdown are both really fast. I"m sure that it is XP home and
have had no troubles with it. The speed won me over.

Switching to NTFS certainly couldn't do any harm.
    Merry Christmas

    FYI: Win2k3 is faster.

Switching to NTFS will take up disk space, and I believe it runs slower than FAT32. Just stick with that.

I would imagine its proprietary software that's been automatically installed.
Try doing a fresh install of Win XP Pro or Win 2K Pro...

NTFS has better filing menthod and runs better, however you will not be able to downgrade to 98 unless ur repartition and format, loosing everything.

I love NTFS and format all my drives at NTFS.

NTFS has slower file enumeration - and stores information most users would never need about files. Security information etc.

FAT32 to NTFS conversion also consumes a considerable amount of disk space...

NTFS has more advantages over FAT32 one of them is security ,file compression..etc, I believe it's quite faster than FAT32 . You can do the conversion easily by typing this command :

convert driveletter: /fs:ntfs *but* you have to backup your system first just in case things go wrong . I did this many times on W2K , and nothing bad happened .

I have all my drives running NTFS except a basic 2 GB partition which is an active partition and it has FAT32.

Just incase I need to boot from floppy and do something.

I did a full error check on the disk and now its running a little better. Considering that I've had this computer only a couple of months, it's way too soon for performance to be lagged like this.

I think I'll eventually try a clean install, run that for a while, and if that still runs like ****, I'll convert to NTFS and see how it goes from there.

    Thanks all.

All I am saying is if ur problem of bad performance exists not because of FAT32 or NTFS but something else then you are far from solving it and you wont see any result out of it now.

But on the bright side u can have security as NTFS supprots it now.
