    CD scratched up<RESOLVED>

    It has become apparent to me that a discount computer comes with many wonderful features
    like "CD-ROM" scratcher. Unfortunatly, this has now caused
    a couple of CDs to go bad...

    Has anyone had any luck whatsoever with getting marks and nicks off of a CD? I would like to try and recover the information that is currently unreadable on my "bad" CDs.

    They are not deep grooves, but many teeny tiny scratch marks on the CD.

    any suggestions?

    Maxell and other companies make a scratch remover for CD's.
    THESE DO WORK WELL.

    It's a suspension of some type of mineral with the same index of refraction as the plastic surface of the CD. You wipe on a thin layer, let it dry, buff it off. The laser that reads your CD cannot perceive the filled crack, it 'sees' right through it.

    So ya, they sell these repair kits that contain a chemical that "softens" the CD material and then lets you wipe out the scuffs.

    On the plus side, it really does work. 90% of the scratches were taken care of, and my cd is now readable.
    Horaay!

    On the negative side, this is one of the few products that I actually should have used in a well-ventilated area.
    The little wipes they give you have a chemical on them that smells god- awful. not something for the kids to be playing with.

    Also on the negative, you only get a few wipes but the package said for 10 disks. but whatever, it's worth it to save the data.
