USB dongle are they worth it?

Please let me know if these devices are worth the extra cost.

Is the protection provided fairly good?

Does anyone knows of an USB dongle with two connectors, one side for conecting to the computer port and the other side for conecting a serial cable?

Does anyone know of a low cost USB dongle, below $25.00?

Hello,

If you mean is a dongle good for protecting from priracy then yes it is. My experience has been with barcode software. They all required dongles. For one thing no one can just copy the program and pass it out or email it (or download it). Of course anything can be hacked but unless it a widely popular program most hackers won't bother.

If you are a serious (or even not so serious) programmer then it certainly is. Developers run into lots of concerns when creating and implementing programs.

The decision to include code for a dongle in the DOTNET enviroment is a major decision that may lead to more DOTNET questions.

I think it can be gathered that since the user posted the question in the DOTNET forum ...then his question was highly likely to be related to programming in the DOTNET enviroment.

YES guys it is a VB.NET questions. You see I'm developing this software in VB.NET for reading the Accounting and Maintenance data off an RS232 port with a laptop connected for a popular (here in Puerto Rico) Expresso Vending machine.

The question is; Should I use a Dongle to protect my work or should I just opt for registrations and KeyCodes.

Which one is safer? The lowest cost Dongle I have found cost $25.00 each and my application will cost to the user $99.00.

Can you please give me your honest opinion.

If the vending machine is exposed to the public and it has sensitive information on it then I would use the dongle. If by chance somone gained access to your software then they might steal your work as well as the data.

By the way, where did you find the dongle you are looking at?

Dongels provide good security and can be found at a decent price. The big PITA about them is if you bend a pin or mistakenly put one in the microwave with your ham and cheese sandwich your SOL until a new one shows up in the mail.
