    Am I behind a firewall/proxy?

Is there any way to tell, without asking the administrators, whether I'm behind a firewall or proxy?

run a ftp server on a random port (a not common one Like 80,25,20,23) and try to connect to it from another computer outside the network. if it doesnt work, your prolly behind a firewall or proxy.

Note: this isnt a sure way of checking but it should work.

EDIT: N/M im a idiot because you couldnt access the port from outside your network unless your computer had a global IP address.

    • Allways Include the Name and Line of the Exception (if one is occuring!)
    • If it is relevant state the version of Visual Studio/.Net Framwork you are using (2002/2003/2005)

    Unhappy

Well... I'll wait for the non-idiotic answer then

Meanwhile, another question: what sort of an effect does a network firewall/proxy have on MSN messenger, when I'm sending and receiving files?

Nowadays, everytime I try to send a file in MSN Messenger, I'll get the message that it was unable to... possibly due to firewall?

The test was successful, which implies...

    a) I'm not behind a firewall?
    b) My network's not behind a firewall?

That means that the ports that there software uses are not blocked but there still could be a firewall

These days it's pretty safe to assume that in a university or work environment that your are indeed behind a firewall. Unless of course, your admins are ****ty.
