Is there a color limit to
the icons that can be shown
    in the menus?

Yes -- 256 colors. Same as any other icon. Either that or the current color depth of the monitor; a 16color monitor obviously can't do 256 colors...

It depends on the depth of your monitor. Some can have up to 24-bit colour.

Icons? 24bit? Hmmm. How would one do this? I've never seen an editor that goes past 256...but I haven't seen everything yet.

Microangelo does that, it supports icons with monocrome, 4, 8, 16 and 24 bit colors. Also it support all size icons, a cool feature
