Server MOBO
I am going to build a server for my HOME network and was wondering what is the best mobo for the job?
GIGABYTE GA-8INXP (SOCKET 478)
Code:
SOCKET 478 CPU'S,
CHIPSETt: i7205,
(4) PC2100 DDR FOR UP TO 4GB RAM,
(1) AGP 8X,
(5) PCI, ATA-133,
ATA-100,
SERIAL-ATA,
REALTEK AC97AUDIO W/ DIGITAL OUT,
INTEL GIGABIT 10/100/1000 LAN CHIP, 6 USB 2.0
OR
ASUS P4G8X-DX (SOCKET 478)
Code:
(P4G8X-DELUXE)(INTEL E7205) P4-478 533MHZ-HYPER THREADING TECHNOLOGY
GIGABIT ETHERNET
DUAL-CHANNEL DDR
8X AGP
IEEE 1394
6 USB 2.0
SERIAL-ATA (5PCI / 1AGP / 4 DDR / MAX 4.0GB)
The mother boards are quite similar except that the GIGABYTE has on-board sound but doesnt have Hyper Threading (does this really help) (the ASUS is $1 more)
i think im going to go with the GIGABYTE but want to be sure cuz they are almost $300 cdn

Good Ol' Platypus
AFAIK Hyper-Threading is CPU-dependant and thus ASUS is trying to pull a fast one... even if it wasn't I'd say get the Gigabyte, because ASUS overprices and underperforms.
All contents of the above post that aren't somebody elses are mine, not the property of some media corporation.
(Just a heads-up)

Don't waste your money on Granite Bay boards. If you want the best, Canterwood is the way to go-- cheaper too, should I recall...
If you're totally dead set on P4 (bad move BTW), why don't you just get a Canterwood board?
I'm bringing geeky back...

If its a server for your home network I doubt you need much CPU power.
Just get an old KT333 and Athlon 1700 or something.
What do you need to serve anyways? That'd help us figure out where to spend the cash...cause if you're just serving internet connections then this is really, really overkill.

I was thinking about learning how to be a network administrator
should I use Win 2003 Server (i gotz the trial d/l already) or Win 2k advanced server (own a licence)
i want to serve Printers, MP3's (almost 4gigs) , Office and movies (10gigs, i do own them (my monitor is better than my tv))

If it is only a fileserver, setup Linux (free) with samba. anything from a p100 (yes a Pentium I 100 Mhz) is enough. Only make sure it can handle a 200 Gb HD or so. So maybe you'll need a PIII for the disksupport, but not for the "power"

I got Mandrake Linux 9.1 setup on my Athlon 1700+ dual booting with xp and havent really had time to get use to it. I would rather use 2k or win 2003 server.

See if you can find an old Athlon ~800-1.4Ghz.
Even that is overkill.

ok, i'll pick up a value set ($100-200) cpu + Mobo + onboard vid
I need to build a Dedicated web server and never really built one, would this be a good mobo for it?

Excellent.

What "this"? The ones you posted? They'll do fine, but they're both overkill and Intel based
Virutally anything will do. Look for a used Athlon in the 800-1.4Ghz range like I said, on a KT266A preferably, pick up an old TNT2/GF2MX/ATI Rage 128/etc.., find a Gigabit LAN card (if you have Gb LAN at home, or plan to get it anyways) then get the most major component of the system: the hard drives....

i always assumed webservers need to be powerful?
So if i wanted i could slap 3 250gig hard drives in my Althon XP 1700+, ECS K7S5A mobo and call it a websever(with the web server software installed)?

Very much so. It'd be fine.
Webservers that serve high loads need to be powerful, particularly if it has server-side scripts / ASP / PHP / etc... But low-volume servers can pretty much be anything.

I think i'll use my existing computer for the Server and get a new computer for Developing / Burning / Downloading.
