You can use it with Dial Ups, but it doesn't show up with a Cable Connection in Dial Up Networking

and ICS CAN be setup with Cable modem but ICS is very problemmatic. Not worth the extra time and effort. Plus you would have to buy a second ethernet card for the main computer, which in that case you might as well spend the extra money for the cable router...

also with ICS if the main computer is turned off, then the others hooked up cant get access...so again the router is best choice becasue it is not dependent on a single computer.

I use Linux on my old PC. Been sitting there for 3 months with no trouble, automatically reconnecting when the DSL connection goes down.

And it also serves as a convenient secure proxy if I'm anywhere filtered....

With DSL, i was using EthetNet300 and all i had to do was to connect with the PC i wanted to go online with, i could connect more than one PC at the same time. The pcs sould connect directly to the modem, not a proxy server or something like that...

That's if you have PPPoE, and a router/hub plugged directly into it. The standard DSL over here is where you have an ADSL modem that needs to run with a computer, and uses that to hold the connection.

Well,

I have a Win 98 as the Server, and I found out that I can use share the Cable Connection, as it took a couple of reinstalls of ICS and reboots for it 2 appear.

The problem though, is once its installed, I can no longer access the internet... well I'm pretty sure anyways, as I've screwed with quite abit of stuff in the Network Properties.

The Cable Modem is a Motorola USB, and i have the Network card for my Home Network. (Client Xp, and maybe a 95)

If I go for the Router option, which is starting to look very good indeed, that sort of topology would it be??

Yep, well I reinstalled ICS, and it stops working, even when use the installation cd for the cable

I'll try some other programs then start hunting for a router if all else fails.

Well, upon closer imspectation, it would appear that all the settings for my network are lost on that comp as well

I've ran into the same situation as you a few months back, and i concluded that the best option was a router. One big plus that i didn't consider before, was that many have a built in firewall because before we had it we got a virus within 2 weeks. Since using the router we havn't had one.

The topology would be

Cable Modem
|
Router
/ \
98 XP

The hub wouldn't be needed anymore.

If you wanted to do stuff like host multiplayer games, send files via MSN etc, you'd have to make sure you got a router capable of 'forwarding' data.

If you want the cheaper option (i don't recommend it), you could buy a 2^nd network card for the computer that used to do the ICS, and plug the cablemodem & the hub into that. Then it should work like a dial-up.

If you really don't want to use a router, an alternative to ICS is a program called WinRoute.. very configureable..

Quick note:

ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) only works properly with a STATIC server IP address of 192.168.0.1. The process LSASS.EXE monitors that IP for incoming/outgoing connections, and acts as a NAT router for your internet connection.

There are other variations of IP such as 10.0.0.1, but they would need third--party NAT (Network Address Translation) software, or proxy server. I spotted someone mentioned WinRoute, made by Kerio. (Check my sig). We use Kerio software and have been more than happy with the results.

Whilst ICS is the easy option... it's not really secure, as LSASS.EXE cannot be locked down, or the ICS clients would not connect, where as proxy server's/NAT router software can be port limited which provides minimal protection from internal hackers/noob's with PING @ CMD!

I ended solving it by using AnalogX Proxy. It means that I have a computer acting as server, but thats no big deal.
