Slow Windows XP
I got a new PC with a speed of 2 GHz and Windows XP. I am very disappointed with this version of Windows, because it takes quite long for the menus to display when I click Start, etc. Is there a way to make it faster? (My previous 600 MHz PC with Win ME was much faster in this respect)

well you probably have winxp home which is crap..
but besides that... there are probably services and other things running in the backgroud that you could probably disable to speed things up..
first thing i do when i get a new pc is format it and get rid of all the crap.. then install winxp pro.. then shut off all the stupid services.. then ur cookin

XP can be made very fast if you know what to do. First as kleinma said do a fresh format, then look on the net for tweaking guides.
XP Home isn't that bad. Just can't go on domains. Its not any slower than Pro.

yeah when i said is sucks..that was more about incompatibilities with software than other things... i have had more problems with xp home.. but the same software works fine on pro

Higher level things like VS.NET, SQL Server, etc may work better/only on Pro, but most normal things should work on both.

There's an excellent guide to WinXP Services here:
www.blackviper.com
Also, XP isn't really happy unless you've got at least 256Mb RAM, never mind what MS say about minimum requirements.

Well... You better try to change XP theme to best performance . Most of the time this works and speed things up . Right click MyComputer--------->Properties-------->Advanced-------->Performance-------> Settings----------> Adjust for best performance .
