    VS .NET book recommendations please

    Hi all,

I've moseyed on over here from the link from VirtualDr, it looks like a great forum, I think I'll enjoy it here

I'm a strictly amateur, intermediate level VB programmer, and I've been happily using VB6 up until now. I've been given VS .NET as a present, and I'm finding it a very different animal. Clearly I need books, but I'm just overwhelmed by the sheer volume available on Amazon, and I could really do with some recommendations on which are good ones, and which to avoid please.

I think, to start with, I need:

    VB .NET

    General Visual Studio .NET

    .NET Framework
    Nick.

Pirate, the link you provided is DEAD.

    I started out with

Microsoft Visual Basic.NET Step By Step

It is geared toward Beginner/Intermediate programmers...some of it I found to be elementary, but most of it is excellent...as it gives detailed instructions, and explains what the differences are between VB6 and VB.NET....little things like "There's no imagelist" in .NET.

It's definitely a good beginner to intermediate book, plus it covers all areas from simple programming procedures, to Graphics and Animation, to Database access and Web Services.

Yes I have an Office XP Step by Step book, it's good. Are there any of the Inside Out series available for VB or VS? I've got the set for Office XP and Windows XP and they're outstanding books.

My main reference for VB.NET is Professional VB.NET 2nd Edition by Wrox Press. It is a good start.

On Amazon.com the book "Visual Basic .NET 2003 -- Step by Step" is a bit critisized for being too much "backward compatible". Meaning, it uses too much of the old methods in VB 6, rather than the new .NET methods. But the book is not useless, and is good for starters. But be wary and take heed of the user-comments/reviews.

If I can recommend only two books in the categories you have specified, it'd be these:
    • Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET (Core Reference) - ISBN 0735613753
    • Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming in Microsoft Visual Basic .NET - ISBN 0735617872

The second one listed explains and clarifies the .NET framework and many of its namespaces. And it's especially good for VB.NET developers.

If you need a book that is not too Language specific, get "Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming" - ISBN 0735614229.

If you need an even more "general" .NET Framework book, I'd recommend: "Introducing Microsoft .NET, Third Edition" - ISBN 0735619182, which covers the .NET Framework version 1.1.
