Windows XP HOME EDITION & ASP Question
Hi,
I am new to ASP & I am learning how to use ASP.Net on my own. I have Visual Studio.Net Enterprise edition installed in my PC (Win XP Home Edition). When I started the ASP.net project for the first time I received this message:
Web Access Failed
The default access mode for this project is set to file share, but the project folder at http://localhost/WebApplication1 cannot be opened with the path "\\javacvb\wwwroot$\WebApplication1". The error returned was:
Unable to create web project WebApplication1. The UNC share "\\javacvb\wwwroot$\WebApplication1" does not exist or you do not have access.
What would you like to do?
Retry using a different file share path?
Location: "\\javacvb\wwwroot$\WebApplication1"
Try to open the project with Frontpage Server extension.
Someone told me that ASP does not work with Windows XP Home Edition. Is this true? Is there any way I can learn ASP with Win XP Home Edition?

no because home edition doesnt come with IIS, and you cant run a web application if you dont have IIS.

you can get webmatrix from www.asp.net.
there is also a work around to get iis working on xp home but u'll need to xp pro cd or win 2k cd (so u might as well install one of them!). You'll only be able to do basic stuff if you do the crack (i could never connect asp.net pages to databases) but it's a start. Search on google for instructions.
i'd get webmatrix if i were u. it's free!

Many thanks.
I am thinking of getting a shared web hosting with a popular web hosting company.
Will ASP works in Unix server with Frontpage Server Extension?
If not, then I think I will buy another CPU.
Thanks again.

Another note, I was also using home edition and thought I could do asp.net apps if I had a web host that supported it, but you can't do that either. At least that is my experience. The only way you are going to do asp.net dev on a home computer is to use the asp.net web matrix. www.asp.net
Once you get xp pro or win 2k, and if you are still looking for a hosting company, check this one...

Their 10 dollar a month plan is pretty good, and you have SQL Server access included.

I need a Unix server to learn CGI & Unix. I have decided to get another CPU with Win XP Pro.
Is there any free web host out there where they allow you to use ASP ? Tripod allows CGI scripts.

No, XP Home Edition doesn't support IIS or PWS...There was a work around for this, but it has since disappeared.
