    Exclamation New European Constitution

Should the British people get a referendum on this before we sign up or is it not such a significant constitutional issue?
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.

Legally the only person that needs to be consulted before a European constitution is applied to UK is the Queen since we are all her subjects. Personally I'd rather be a citizen of anything than a subject, but that's another matter.

Did you get a referendum in Ireland? I heard that some European countries are getting a referendum.

There were two referenda in Ireland on the Nice treaty. The first time people said "no" but that didn't suit the government so they asked again...the next time people said "yes".

In both cases turnout was really low. Ireland has a written constitution which can only be changed by a referendum and each EU treaty that comes along will probably require another one.
