Question A genuine request for information

I mean no offence and I am not at all sarcastic when I ask :

Is it true and "right", that for anything and everything to earn the prefix "World", the US of A has to be involved in that thing?

    Well that's a tricky one.
On one hand, a lot of people, myself included, think the US should keep out of other people's business.

But at the same time, the US is part of the world, so to refer to something affecting this world, as a large country, they should be included in that reference...

The US didn't actually join WORLD WAR II until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor... but it was still being called WWII at the time...

like it or not.. the US is the leading superpower in the world... so when it comes to world events... chances are we are somewhere near by

I think the confusion is caused by having the World Series of baseball and the World Wrestling Foundation based solely in the US....

I often hear criticism from non-Americans about the name “World Series” in baseball. People often take it as a personal affront and a symbol of American arrogance in thinking the United States of America can dare prefix something “World” when it only involves essentially teams from only 2 countries, The United States and Canada.

In the days of political correctness it seems as if non-Americans are a tad too sensitive when it comes to anything that seems to remind them of American dominance militarily, economically, and politically.

People have to remember that the name of “World Series” came about in 1903 when the first of such World Series was played in the United States. At this time the United States was hardly a world power. It was Europe that still dominated the globe. The name was not meant to denigrate the rest of the world it was used as a selling point to popularize the sport.

Today the Major Leagues contain a wide variety of players from South America, Cuba, Central America, Mexico, Canada, The United States, Japan, and many other nations. The best players from around the world come to play in the Major Leagues so in a sense it really is a World Series.

Try not to get all bent out of shape over a name

As for the WWF...the name is just marketing. Its sports entertainment and not a real organization

The point was can we call it "World" Something with absolutely no involvement by the US of A in that thing whatsoever.

As to being bent out of shape over a name.......

Strange question but were they called world wars before or after they ended. They might have just been 'The war' which means America was counted in the world war definition.

When we say things like World war we tend to be talking more about larger countries with large influence such as the super powers so i think the answer is no as America is a large influence in the current world both economically and politically

I have a feeling I have miscommuincated (as usual!) again. I was not asking whether anything with the US of A in it should not be used with "World". Rather, if anything does not have the US of A in it, can be termed with "World"? The US of A and 10 other nation comprising the "World Series" (Baseball? Is that not some sort of a spin-off from of the "Gentleman's Game"?), no problems. 25 nations not including the US of A? Would that comprise a "World Body"? Is SARS a world threat, yet?

People can call things what they want. What does it matter what something is called. You can your own nation the "worlds only superpower" if you want if it makes you feel any better

How about World Cup soccer? Until recently, the USA was most definitely NOT in that, but it was truly world wide.

I think something can be called a world organization if a 'majority' of this worlds populace is being represented in said organization. By majority, I would also have to stipulate that a majority of countries are involved also. In my book, 3/4 would be the amount to be deemed a majority, not that pansy 51% crap.

So, yes, an organization could be a world organization without the USA in it. I would have to bet though, that if the USA isn't involved and we think it sucks, then we could influence enough countries out of it if we really wanted to.

Anyone watch "The War Party" on BBC World? At least a minority in the Washington DC coterie confirms my views on the current conflict in Iraq --- No fear of attacks on the US of A, No "Good Samaritan" business --- Just plain old imposition of oneself on others, "I am good, you are evil" statements, export of ideology and principles by force.

Interesting profiles on the Neo-Con's, though.

HW: I agree with your disgust with the 51% crap

Can there be a "world" anythig without mentioning Albania? What kind of retarded question is this? The world includes all countries... and seeing as how the US of A is the greatest of ALL the countries i don't think you can leave it out when you say the "World"
