No more SP !
I'll quit this bull**** (sp) because they do nothing but slowering my machine (I'm sure everyone else has the same problem) . Now , I know XP is buggy, How can I secure my machine since it's online the whole day . What do you suggest to install to protect myself against viruses and hackers and spams too . Sure You would say Norton , what else (best combination of apps )?
Thank you

Have no idea....the one in our router came when we ordered ADSL...so we didn't pay anything...but a real firewall that is only used to stop hackers are probably very expencive....

Pirate: If you're not being hacked at the moment, then you have nothing to worry about. If your computer's been up for a long time, nothing's *really* going to change. It may be a good investment, however, to block all ports other than HTTP and those you need for email, etc. It never hurts.

Well its only natural to fix bugs. But I do have to point out that the general concensus is that XP, with slight tweaking, is solid as a rock and plenty fast. Linux can be made better (depends on your opinion though), but its harder to do and requires more knowledge/experience.

Win2k is also very stable for me. Generally I reboot every 1-1.5 months (although just now GTA3 is making my CPU heat up quite a bit and I haven't had problems like that before)

I reboot all of the time, because of kernel upgrades in Linux, and switching back and forth from Win2k to Linux, and back again. I'm getting WinXP though, pretty soon, because I've heard it's a bit faster, and would be delighted to be able to find a tweak guide for it

You don't really need a guide. Just poke around and you'll find the stuff (though TweakUI would be beneficial).

My average uptime on my laptop is similar...once I went for 3 months.
I do hibernate the laptop often though, but thats not a reboot...sooo..

I am using Win2K. I have had the machine for nearly 1 year, and it has only crashed once. I have also turned it of a couple of more times when I have installed new apps. But the rest of the time it is on 24/7..

don't dismiss it too soon...once you get rid of the junk (system restore, themes, etc.) and get SP1 + the rest of the updates installed is nice and solid

Yes , I always say that , but I'm still afraid I lose my data again (two times , 1st was a virus , 2nd was my fault ) . Well , this will handle hacking threads , What about viruses(hate this word) ? I had 30 infected files in one day when I got up in the morning but Norton was there as usual and helped me to get rid of them automaticaly .

So far, with System Restore, themes, and everything else disabled, it *seems* zippy. Hell, it loads in under 10 seconds.

It's a very effective additional layer.
It is technically possible to secure a system *without* the use of a firewall, but it requires a lot more things to be got right, including on the programming side.
