Mp3 Bitrate
When burning mp3 files in CDA format (for playing in standard CD players) is there any advantage in terms of improved sound quality in re-ripping the mp3 at a higher bitrate before burning or will the sound quality of the CD be the same regardless of the bitrate?

generally you will hear an improvement.
128kbps is very marginal for audio. 192 is usually fine though. still, i use VBR with processing settings on high (this is using the LAME dll) and an average bitrate of about 180.
but if you have access to hte cd, why not just copy it directly?

Generally, here are the "lossless" rates for certain codecs:
Mp3: 256kbps
Ogg: 192kbps
Mp3pro: 160kbps
Aac: 160kbps
Overall I would go for OGG if you want the best quality in the smallest space, as AAC and MPEGPRO are both propietary, thus costly and hard to find.

i tried swithcing to ogg a while ago (before i got my mp3 player), but it took way too long to convert all my songs.....
and now since my mp3 player only plays mp3/wma/rm....meh. disk space is cheap.

You were probably using one of the alphas... it's quite stable now, as it's matured (hit version 1 a long time ago ). Regardless, it took less than 4 minutes to convert an entire CD (73 mins or so... The Rising) to OGG Vorbis. You may fancy another go
