Discuss Develop is really a mailing list archive rather than a forum.

Yes, there are a lot of forums, but a personal recommendation would save me a lot of time sorting through the lamers. I've already been through quite a few.

So far this is the best forum I have found (in terms of post count and sensible/informed users) which is a bit strange since it is primarily a VB forum.

I can't help feeling there is a gem out there I have not found yet. I'll keep looking!

    Thanks for the suggestions.

C-sharp corner, which is a dedicated C# site, has only 336 threads and 800 posts. This forum, where C# is just an add-on, has 3076 posts. I'd rank C-sharp corner lower, despite the name.

GotDotNet, I could never get the email notification feature to work. Always seemed to email me every post or nothing at all. Have they fixed it? Good post count though, at 13,000.

ASP net not bad, but everything is spread out over a whole bunch of forums - and a low post count on the C#. Seems more webby than window-based, which is fine, but my interest is more the windows end - at least until I can host C# apps on a cheap server, like an old Raq.

Mantro's has a few interesting links, but nothing to beat this forum.

Experts Exchange is fine, but lacks a sense of commuity. It's basically a huge list of questions and a a buch of gurus competing to answer them. Currently there are 819 unanswered questions. Hardly ever see an unanswered question in this forum. Always somebody willing to have a go, even if it's general advice or even plain wrong!

I may have another go at GotDotNet to see if I can get the notification working - but if it starts sending me 100 emails a day again, I'm gone.

Looks like this is the best place for now, unless there is another unknown site out there. Most of the folks in the C# area here seem to be old VB hands like me who now do both - which suits me fine.

Might get a bit more interest though, if they changed the masthead name to something more general than VB forums.

I know there is or was an MFC forum at the MS page that was quite good. Maybe there's a similar thing for C#?

C-SharpCorner recently switched from their old forum software to asp.net forum software. This place here has had the same software for years. So of course the numbers will be off and look like little activity, but when you reset the forums software, it all goes back to zero.

The new forum software can't import the old threads? That surprises me. That would be an essential feature if the writers wanted other existing forums to change software.

But the end effect is still that the old threads are lost I guess?

Anyway I'll bear it in mind. Thanks for the info.

www.cprogramming.com has a C# forum too, but it seems quite young and not very active with only 222 threads and not at a high rate. But at least they have a member base of 7500 members.

Isn't GotDotNet the Microsoft forum for C#? Ceratinly has the smell of Microsoft about it.

Well I do look up to C++ programmers, but sometimes it causes a pain in the back of the neck

Yup. And about 90% of the people there are under 16. Not exactly the crowd I'd like to talk with.
