Internet Connection Problem
I have here with me a friend's Compaq Presario (running Windows 98). The computer is still fairly new (~500MHz? Celeron, 64MB RAM, 6 GB Hard Drive).
Here's the deal: We were installing a network, and I installed a D-Link network card in the comptuer. I ran the network configuration wizard on an XP computer on the network, and created disks. After running the wizard on the 98 laptop, I lost all dialup connectivity, and I don't think it will get Internet over the LAN either.
Dialup will still make a connection, and put the icon in the system tray. However, no program will make a connection through the dialup.
This computer's CD Rom drive is dead, so the one way I have of comunicating with it is through the network card. I have considered re-installing Internet Explorer 6, and formatting. The problem with formatting is that no CD drive = big problem. I have a factory restore disk though... would it be possible to partition the hard drive and copy the contents of the factory restore disk to the laptop via the network and restore from the partition ?
Or am I thinking too hard here? is there an easier way to get Internet on this laptop?
If I need to clarify anything more, just let me know, I am about out of ideas !

As I understood , the laptop messed up the dialup connection ! why don't you delete that connection and create new one .
If you can communicate the CD Drive on the other PC(desktop or whatever) , then I guess you can recover the laptop . Am I right ?

How To Fix Dial Up Problem:
it sound like the computer is trying to make a connection to the internet thru the network card
In internet Explorer goto tools > Internet Options
Select The Connections Tab
Make now select Always Dial my Default Connection
[Im attaching a screenschot but i have winxp. It should be similar enough for you to figue it out]
Network:
Are you sure all your network settings are correct?
Are you using a hub/ router/switch?
If you dont have a hub/ router/switch make sure ur cable is a crossover not a strait though or patch
Make sure you have got a connection
try pinging eachothers computer
make sure your card deplex modes are the same

Hey, thanks for your help.....
I have tried recreating the dialup connections and telling it to always dial - it pops up the box, dials, makes a connection, but no program will use it.... it continues to say "Server not found"
At this point, I don't care about getting on the broadband connection - I just want dial-up back.....
On my laptop, I have broadband via ICS from an XP system downstairs. When I leave, I manually start a dialup connection and it uses that for internet. Not so with my friend's laptop... and grrrr.... it was fine till I ran the XP config wizard.....
I uninstalled DUN and installed it again, I totally removed TCP/IP/all network settings enough to make it take away Network Neighborhood, but it still is not happy. But I don't know that reinstalling DUN does anything - when I installed it it gave me back all the connections....
I wish all computers had XP... they are so easy.....
Any more ideas ?
Pirate: You are suggesting I restore the laptop over the network ? Would it go for that? I really like the idea.... but how would I get the laptop to boot from a CD in another computer? (ie, Windows would not be running, no shared resources....)

Does your BIOS support Network booting (when you restart the computer press F12 ) ? Do you have that option the MotherBoard setup ?

Got into the BIOS, I don't see anything like that.... would it matter that the computer did not come with a network port? I'm using a D-Link PC card NIC.....

Can you copy I386 Folder to your laptop (browse XP CD in the other PC ) ? If you can then you should be able to run the setup localy . Got it ?

Your CD Drive in the laptop is dead , right ?
You have the other PC connected to the laptop , right ?
if all yes , then just put XP CD in the other PC , from your laptop browse the CD , copy I386 Folder to it , then you don't need a CD Drive in your laptop . You can install XP again locally (from the copied folder) . Did I understand that right ? or I'm wrong ?

Well I guess I could do the same thing if the copy of the restore disk on the hard drive doesn't work with on 98, right?
Sorry it took so long to get that....
