    DVD Drive Help

I just bought a DVD-ROM made by Samsung (Model SD-604), and I can't find any drivers for it. Not even on their site. And the drive came with no CD or disks.

Anyone know of a good driver database?

When I plug it in, it doesn't show up in My Computer. DVD-ROMs don't need drivers?

When starting ur PC if you go to BIOS settings can see it. If not then try to Auto Detect the IDE devices and see if it selects...

If you just bought that drive that I guess its jumper settings would be on CABLE SELECT and if there is another driver in the same IDE with CABLE SELECT then u need to make sure that you atleast choose one to master or one to slave...both on CABLE SELECT doesn't work...

    I had the same problem...

    Cheers...

What OS are you running? Most of them should detect it without any drivers. I recently put a Sony DVD-ROM and am running Windows XP and I didn't need any drivers.

You NEVER need drivers for those things. its all handled by the BIOS/southbridge now.

Or else, how would you ever expect to install Windows?

    You've made your point.

I'll try these suggestions when I get home. Thanks.

Sweet. It was the jumpers. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Guess I didn't learn much in that A+ class I took last year

    Thanks again!

    Okay, more problems now...

They both show up in Windows Explorer (my CD Drive and my DVD Drive), yet both of them are labeled what the CD in the CD Drive is labeled.

And when I put a DVD in the DVD drive, it tells me there's no disc in there.

    Any ideas?

I have the CD Drive setup as Master and the DVD as Slave.

Can you put them on different channels, both as slave, and see what happens?

Also test them out in DOS. Get that MSCDEX going

Check if you have enabled DMA for both the drives and also check for IRQ conflicts... Since you have already taken A+ classes I assume that you know how to do so...

By the way what software are you using to watch DVDs. I am using PowerDVD 4...Also do u have region settings on DVD...How many times can u chnage it...

    Cheers...

Try disabling DMA for one of the drive and see what happenes.

Assuming you are using XP Start -> Run -> msinfo32.exe and press enter.

In hardware resources section you can check for DMA and IRQ conflicts details.

What model of DVD Rom do u have. Usually u can use DVD Rom to watch certain region movies and in some drives you can change the region 5 times or 4 times.

Do a google search about DVD Regions and you will find the info.

    Cheers...

I just unhooked my CD-ROM, set the DVD as master, and had it hooked up by itself, and it still says no disc in drive.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at here. How do I tell if I have a conflict?

    I have Samsung SD-604.
When you run this program it also tells about conflicts...

    XP Start -> Run -> msinfo32.exe

    What type of disk?

    CD
    CD-R
    CD-RW

    DVD
    DVD-R
    DVD-RW

You may need software to view the ANY of the DVD drives and the CD-R, CD-RW

    What motherboard are you running?

If you have installed any VIA drivers (or they were installed when the PC was built), some DVD drives refuse to work. I'de suggest you upgrade your motherboard drivers, and see if that helps.

Or... it may be the DVD drive is faulty. Doubtful, but possible.

The Samsung SD-604 is a couple of years old now i believe, and may require UDMA 66/100 cables. Check your systems not running DMA133 or higher, as this may result in your DVD not working. If the systems quite new... thats probably the case.

    Regards,

    Paul.

Okay, I still haven't solved this, so I'll summarize where I stand:

    • I purchased a DVD-ROM (Samsung SD-604)
    • DVD-ROM is set as Slave
    • CD-ROM is set as Master
    • DVD-ROM shows up in My Computer, but says there is no disc in there.
    • DMA is enabled for both drives

The system is a few years old as well. I'm not sure how to check if I'm running DMA133 or higher.

Any other help anybody could provide would be appreciated.

VIA's website is www.via.com.tw. The drivers are known as the 4-in-1s (aka Hyperion)

If its a few years old then its most likely ATA66 or 100.
