/me pulls a line out of the big Book O' Quotes:

To run DOS commands, use SHELL, about the same as in VB.
But still:

I use: NASM, HTML, Perl, PHP, JavaScript, Batch, TI-Basic (TI-83+), QBasic 1.1, QuickBASIC 4.5, QuickBASIC Extended 7.1, VB-WIN 6 Ent., and the rest of Visual Studio 6 Ent. And who knows what else!

QBASIC also supports port I/O, which could be very usefull to control the serial port registers.
I wrote some time ago a QB app to read a DCF clock, which put the RF signals via a serial protocol, in µ-seconds!!!
That's just impossible in VB6, but in QB: all right!!!
