    Angry IIS Problems... very annoying

I have a weird problem here. IIS services (W3SVC) will be working fine, and out of nowhere, suddenly stop. I have to manually open up the Microsoft Site Server console, and start the service again.

It happens completely randomly, I've tried to recall or correlate any events that may have been going on at the same time as the stoppage of the services, but there are none. Not only W3SVC, but the FTP services, Administration website, and SMTP server all stop randomly.

What the **** is going on, and how can I fix this? It's a huge pain in the ass to have to come to the server room every few minutes just to restart the services.

(I'm running Windows NT Server 4.0 with Service Pack 6, Option Pack 4)

    OK where to start.

First check all the event viewer entries you probably have something (hopefully)

run perfmon.exe and look at memory, connection pools etc etc

Turn on logging of IIS and look at the logs.

I had a very similar problem where an asp page was converting a string into a date and if the string wasn't convertable it stoppes the www service!! (took ages to find but found it in the iis logs)

Sorry can't be more specific but it could be a combination of things.

Things seem a little hopeful now.

The IIS logs yielded nothing, but when I opened up the Event Viewer, I saw a "DCOM" or "Service Control Manager" as the Source of the errors.

    The DCOM error is:

DCOM got error "The specified service does not exist as an installed service. " attempting to start the service BROKSVC with arguments "" in order to run the server:
    {CD8F114E-C4AC-11D0-BBDA-00C04FB615E5}

It is followed by the Service Control Manager error, each time:

The Site Server Authentication Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
What are these errors pointing at?

I'm using perfmon at the moment, but am really not too sure as to what I should be paying particular attention to.

I seems to be trying to start the Broker Service, but has the wrong arguments or isn't installed as a service...Are you running Back Office Server?

Yes, I am running Back Office Server. What is the Broker Service, and what do I do about it? Do I need a reinstall of certain components?
