networking from 98se to 2000_ FOUND IT_ Thanks
I have a network between two machines running 98SE and 2000.
I can ping both machines using fast99, I can use Qcheck and get no errors. But I can not go from 98SE to 2000 in the networking icon on the desktop No questions asked just an empty explorer window. I use the same username and password on both machines. I see from 2000 to 98Se all files.
What have done wrong and were?
With kind regards,
Brian

Verify that you've enabled sharing in your WIN2000 machine and you you have enough privilege to access it !

Well, when accessing / browsing another persons computer over a network (in NT based O/S's anyway) you are seen as the "guest" user by default. what you might want to try and do is just enable this user (its disabled ny default), then it'll be just like two Win9x machines

Yeh maybe , because Guest account is disables by default .
Make sure that you have shared some resources on WIN2000 !!

Both, Win2K and Win9x, cos if nothing is shared I dont think it finds the machinge, or gives an error, either way, I know something doesnt work

Thank you both ubunreal69 and pirate.
I have made sure that the map "my documents" is shared and have give permission to everybody (that is not wise on a network with internet connection, I know)
And I have enabled guest account.
Still nothing, I can see three names in network, The workgroup the two names of my computers but if I open the win 2000 machine it has 0 items.
So I think that the network works but win 2000 is blocking access.
I will now restart both and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply.

C is already shared but I can not change the user access because windows says that the "access rights can not be changed"
If I press the properties on a map in explorer I can change the user access I then can click on local user or network user but win 2000 can not find a specific network user only standard ones and himself server//clingse (name of computer//group) but not desktop//clingse

My home network is one 2k PC and one win98 PC. I put them both in the same workgoup and created identical user accounts on both machines. Same username and password. I created one shared folder on each machine. On my 2k box I gave permissions to the two user accounts, mine and my daughters. On the 98 box you can't go by users it's all or none if I remember correctly so you select all users. You need "client for Microsoft networks" and "file and print sharing" installed and bound to the protocol you want to use. I used Netbeui for file and print sharing and TCPIP for INTERNET access. I bound File and print sharing to Netbeui only to make my shares invisible to the Internet. Win2k and XP sometimes take a long time to show other computers on a LAN, mine did. There is a registry hack to fix it, if you want it let me know and I will find the link.
PC performance buffs have long measured hardware advances using a few simple metrics: Is it faster? Is it bigger? Does it have more blinky lights?

found it !!!!
Thanks everybody,
I asked the same question to a "know all" friend of mine. And he told me that the name of the share on the win 2000 machine was to long and he was right again.
I called it Server_C_Disk and Server_C_MyDocuments and both were to long I made a new share and called it Server_C and it worked.
