Aaarg ... what the hells happened ?!?!
I turned on my PC on Saturday morning and whilst Windows (XP PRO) was loading I got a message. Something about a registry file or part of the registry file having to be restored. It only had an OK button so I pressed it.
Now when it has finished loading Windows all I get is a background screen. No icons, and no taskbar. I can do a CTRL/ALT/DEL and get up the task Manager window etc., but thats it.
I presume my registry is probably screwed now, due to whatever it did when it thought it was fixing itself.
Has anyone got any ideas how I might be able to rectify this ?
I tried SAFE mode too, and got the same results.
I also tried the "Load from Last Time It Successfully Worked" option, and geuss what ..... that gave me sod all as well
I just wondered if there was anything I could do APART from a re-install, which would be a right pain.
Thanks in advance ........
Steve.

System restore
You could try doing a System restore before this happened, and if it happend again, Find the Reg. String it restored and Delete it.

So when you do 'File > New Task > Explorer.exe' it just falls over a few seconds later ?
I suggest you grab Filemon and Regmon from www.sysinternals.com, fire them up, then load up explorer again and see why its falling over.

Nice idea, but I can only run apps by browsing for the EXE and firing them up as new processes.
Anyone know the process for "File/Run" or "File Explorer" ?
If not I aint ever gonna get these things installed

So stick filemon and regmon onto floppy and run them from File->Run in task manager.
And sadly "Windows Explorer" ie. the file explorer is explorer.exe

You should keep an image of your hard drive in case your system ****s up again.
