I need a rOuter but y
I have a LinkSy BSF41 right now (or something, I dont wanna go check atm), anyway its 4 port and it lags out.. In games, if me and my bro play, it lags out, we just freeze and need to rePlug the power of the router in, first: This is annoying, second: This changes around my internal IP address (the 192.168.1.XXX) and then I need to reConfigure all the ports and stuff on it.
There is no fix for this problem as of yet, I have the old version of this router, there is a newer version which doesn't lag out. I want to get a new router but not LinkSys, what else is good? D-Link is what I think I am going to get, but should I?

Are you sure the new version doesnt lag?
Sounds like it could be fixed by turning off DCHP and giving yourself permanent lan ip adresses.

Have you (or can you) update the firmware on the router?
I just bought a dLink this weekend, and seems to be working great so far.
Hello? Underpaid code monkey speaking...

Yes actually, I updated it the first time I had the probLem, and it lagged out more, I use 1.40 now, Its not the latest or oldest but it lags me out the least.
How would I put permanent/manual LAN IP's? If I disable DCHP

Go into your NIC's TCP/IP's settings and assign yourself an ip.
I had a very similar problem and it was fixed by turning off DCHP, i also know of many other people who have had similar problems and turning it off fixed it for them too.

And I do this for every NIC card on the network? I change the XXX part for this 192.168.1.XXX and thts it? I can assign like my PC to 105, the next PC to 110..etc, also do I need to Subnet or anything? I am at school atm, I will play around with the settings when I get home. Thanks.

Yes do it for every NIC connected to the network, subnet mask should be (255.255.255.0). On all your computers put the gateway as your router and you may also need to but the DNS as your router.

on my XP machine, I go to network connections, right click TCP IP and properties, set IP manually, then I put 192.168.1.6, 255.255.255.0 and the rest as 192.168.1.1 (default gateway) and preffered DNS. I click ok and then:
go to http://192.168.1.1 and put 'set IP manually' or w/e. I put my WAN IP in the first set of boxes, under it I put 255.255.255.0 (even tho by default its 255.255.248.0) and under that it says defualt Gateway, I put 192.168.1.1, for DNS, it has 3 sets of fields, what do I fill them with? then I disable DHCP. And my PC's IP should be 192.168.1.6, I want my other Pc to be 168.1.7.. etc
What am I doing wrong? ShouLd I leave the .248.0 subnet on the router? and how would I find my DNS. Also on top of the Setup for the router, it, 192.168.1.1 (devide IP Address) and 255.255.255.0 is selected from a dropdown listBo (subnet Mask), do I change anything there?
Another question, on the bottom I have 'connect on demand: Max idle time 5 mins' and 'Keep alive, redial period 30 sec' with connect on Demand selected. should I leave the default values? what do those do.
