How to by pass start up programs in Win XP?

In Windows 98, there's a program named "System Configuration Editor" which allows to select which programs will be loaded into memory when the computer first starts.

What is the equivalent program in Windows XP? In my WinXP, a lot of programs are loaded in memory during start up and thus makes my machine slow. How can I by pass start up programs in Win XP?

    Thanx

    Use msconfig.

I'm running XP Pro, and it has it, although I'm not sure about Home.

The other method involves checking the registry and boot ini I think..

    Lightbulb MSCONFIG

open the run dialog and type "msconfig",

the only problem with this is that you get an annoying msg everytime the computer is started. I think this is ment to be used for clean boot's and one offs but i use it every day for the same reasion you said ,

    Cheers,
