What type of forum r u running here??
I got a PM alert today, 11th of Febuary 03, from a PM sent on the 6th of Febuary this year?
It isnt that hard to deliver messages you dont even need to do anything. Hell if your the post office maybe i could excuse it.
Any explanations for this??
b
P.S Perhaps you should put some effort into getting this board back to it's best and less into those ad's????

Well said.
I didn't have any PM problems but I'd like to see the site back to the same standard as it was when John, James etc were in power

Emails do not exactly take a direct route..... sometimes they feel the need to travel the world first... it's isn't an instantaneous (sp?) thing..... so don't blame the mods/admins ... it maybe something out of their control.

If it was a PM, then it would have stayed in the system. As such, there is no reason it should have been delayed.
The only reason that I know of for a PM alert not having shown up earlier was because the user wasn't logged into the system before that. The delay on an alert for a PM should be a few seconds to a few minutes at most -- unless you aren't logged into the system, in which case there won't be an alert until you do log in.

I have witnessed at least 3-4 times that there are new PMs lying in my inbox, but I don't get a pop up message box.
And before any other routine advice, I have ensured I was logged in (else I could not see the PMs ) and have browsed the forums before dropping into my User CP.
There's something definitely wrong sometimes.

perhaps it is all of these crappy ads everywhere slowing the system down ???
i think this place was better when John and James were here, and the whole place was more about being a community and helping people, rather than killing very strong communties and trying to be greedy on both money and bandwidth!!
Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.

How about losing hundres of users and thousands of posts because John and James were using an unreliable hosting service? I'd call that a problem.

That happened towards then end more so with Karl. John and James had a few problems but it ran smoothly most of the time.
Jamie:
Yeah so perhaps thats the best way it was good then and crap now.
I admire you 2, martin and jamie, for trying your hardest here but when somethings dead let it be your skills and time can be better used elsewhere.

Yes, most of the old regulars have moved on, but there's still an enormous influx of new users.
So its far from dead

I have to disagree. While a few of the old regulars left and some also visit brand "G", I believe it's an over-statement to say "most have moved on".

Could be many are still here but the reply's are far from the average.
In my opinion the reply's to threads were more reliable in the good old days.
Bad things happen, shame it happened here.

There's one problem.
A single instance does not represent many.
Aside from that, during which I wasn't even here (I received a few emails from you I think Marty - regarding DaoK's post count??) there haven't been all that many problems.
It seems to be deteriorating a little.
sad.

I don't post as much now as I used to.
I've found people are pretty much less appreciative and that their question has been answered many times before
This makes the forum a little more tedious.
It's also tedious that you come back the next day, only to find the first 2 pages filled with new questions.
Then you find a thread that you replied to a while ago, where you posted / put some effort into some code for the person and they don't even bother to reply.

No JupiterMedia are not a virus.
It was the regualrs leaving that caused the forum to be left with new users just asking single questions and being fairly unappreciative.
Granted the regulars left because of JupiterMedia, but its because they left, that there are now a higher proportion of new users.

374 posts over 4 years?
You sure are a regular...
The amount of users on this site has increased considerably over the past 4 years...
If they were to increase speed they would have to get a faster connection etc with more bandwidth, resulting in greater expense and most likely more ads.
Are you on dial-up?
I'm on cable internet in Australia and it seems ok to me..

Regarding abhijit's post count just look at mine. I've been here for a while (though not nearly 4 years), but my post count is still small. I tend to just browse the site and find what I need without even posting my question.
Oh and I think since James Stanich and Hack (and maybe sastraxi) left I havent seen too many accurate replies. I'm sure many of them are still being answered, but the amount of really good programmers to beginners (like me) is pretty sad.

If you are a member for four years, you should be able to form a coherent reply to the questions of others.
I still try to answer a few questions but the number of times you see repetitive questions that have been answered many times before becomes quite disheartening.
It truly makes me wonder whether people even bother to search (I am guilty of not searching etc) for a similar question at all.
Regarding post count etc,
Post count isn't as such, important. The number of posts you have, based on the membership length suggests more about your contribution levels than your ability.
It's good that you search for similar questions but do you contribute to the community as well?
Chances are, the longer a person has been a member, the more contributions / responses to help others they will have made...

Yes i must say also that i agree post counts are not always an indicator of how smart you are, just how much you want to contribute to the community. Look at people like Guv who have a low post count but are extremely bright. It also matters what language you perfer to program in. It is public knowledge that the Visual Basic forum never fails to have daily a fresh batch of questions served up while the java and assembly forums are slow moving at best.

It's slower beacuse of the way they changed the loading of the page and the advert at the top!
It was the regualrs leaving that caused the forum to be left with new users just asking single questions and being fairly unappreciative.
Oh and let me guess if they were here everyone would be kissing each others feet haha my left testicle!
