    monitor isnt working w/xp

Why doesn't my generic monitor work w/XP pro, but not Win 98? When I hook it up to the XP machine, the screen is mostly dark and moves across the screen horizontally really fast. I can only tell because the cursor moves across really fast. Umm...that's all I know. Thanks in advance.

does this happen only in windows, or can't you see the dos & splashscreen views on the monitor when booting up.

If you can see these bits, hit the F8 key like mad right before the winxp splash screen appears & boot into safe mode - see if you can alter your screen resolution, refresh rate & colour settings here to turn them lower, then reboot into windows normally.
