Crazy mouse problem

I built a cheap machine to replace one that suddenly bit the dust overnight and now have been fighting an annoying problem with my mouse pointer acting as if it has an IRQ conflict (even though its a ps2 with its own port). While moving the mouse in normal use, sometimes the cursor sticks or stops as if the cpu decided to use its IRQ for something else. I have built many pc's so its kicking my butt. Heres what I have: New case, ECS P4S5A/DX+ Motherboard, Intel 1.7 478 pin Celeron, and 1 floppy, 1 CD Burner, Creative TNT2 32 MB Video, Creative SB Live, PNY 256 MB SDRAM, Built in Network port and not much else. The Celeron is the item I keep thinking is hosing me with its huge 128 cache! I had 512 SDRAM in but removed one stick in case of timing problem, I removed fan on CPU and replaced the factory foil tape thermal barrier with thermal paste in case of a hot spot. I reinstalled the OS Win/98 SE on another partition for testing (same problem) and swapped the mouse with a new one. I do have ETrust AntiVirus and Kerio Personal Firewall (I removed ZoneAlarm thinking it was the problem) and the mouse sticks even with the firewall disabled. It seems more pevelant when online and now I am wondering if this is normal an I am too focused on it, or if its a problem? Anyone have this happen to them?

I flashed my bios after finally finding the hidden pcb # on the back of the manual instead of on the MB and thought it was fixed. But as about 24 hours has passed it looks like the mouse is starting to act goofy again. I keep thinking it has something to do with the ACP or ACPI and when it wakes up, it seems at its worse. Does this ring any bells?

Your recommendations on a good motherboard for the 1.7 Intel Celeron?

I know Vision would tell you to look no further than Gigabyte, however I do like my ABIT mobo... I'm not sure if this is what you want because some rate these mobos at max. 1ghz, do the new celerons use the P4 socket type or the P3?

The other box I threw together about 3 months ago I used a Intel 1.7 Celeron and an ABIT BL7-RAID with Win2k and it seems to work great. The Celerons have a 478 pin config. I may just buy another ABIT BL&-RAID if I can find a good deal...

Abit aren't bad at all.

I don't push Gigabyte that hard.... do I? I've just looked through all my posts, and i think i've mentioned them well over 100 times! Oh well, the more people that know, the more reliable system's will be!

The GA-60X is only a PC133 mobo, and whilst it's still a GR8 board... there are better models from Gbt.

Asus = Speed
Abit = Quality
Gigabyte = Both!!!

There I go again! LOL

I've not had too many problems with either Gigabyte or Abit (actually on a new Gigabyte P4 system here, my dad's ). My own Abit system has been rock solid on 2000, Solaris, GNU/Linux

Only problem with my old Gigabyte system (GA-6VXE-based) was that it couldn't handle NT, which, after a lot of messing, turned out to be the VIA chipset. It's now a router running OpenBSD with no troubles

I have found some manufacturers selling "refurbished" motherboards at a discount rate along with the usual 1 year warranty on parts and labor. Has anyone ever tried any of these deals? Also, what would be the main thing they could do to refurbish a warranty item in the first place? Cold solder joint, redo a messed up flashed bios, replace a cmos battery, a capacitor for a power supply, etc...?? I don't think it would be any major operation on chipsets etc. Anyone??

they could replace the chipset i suppose, but so far as fixing a defective chipset...no

they'd have to do that FIB thing

I used to work for someone who did that sort of thing.

Only difference, he said they were new... and charged new prices. Thats why I left, and started up on my own.

Steer-clear from refurbished stock, it's not cost effective and will probably give you trouble.

I think I may have other issues here so I am still trying to figure it out. May be ACPI related as I am on Win98SE on this box. I also noticed the CPU seems to run at 100% and that seems wrong but when I checked some others they were the same...It may be a SIS chipset thing or ???I will report back as I progress. Intel was of no use...last tech said it may be old technology (Win98SE) not compatible with new technology (Intel Celeron P4 1.7) and I don't think so...
