what is the maximum number of decimal places of precision in a REAL in fortran?

It is implementation dependent.
approximately:
REAL*4 (single precision) is 7-8 decimal places
REAL*8 (double precision) 15 decimal places
REAL*16 (quad precision) 31 decimal places
Look at your compiler doumentation
