Autonumber in Oracle

I read on VBforum that auto-numbering could only be done by a trigger in Oracle, but someone else tells me it can be done as a datatype.. anyone have any ideas about this reclusive datatype?

I was looking at something along the lines of...

CREATE TABLE Test (
TestCol Number DEFAULT rownum)
