Bye Bye AMD XP, Hello Athlon 64!!!

As you may or may not have heard... AMD's 8th generation processors are going to be made available soon.

The Athlon 64 is expected to be the first 64bit x86 processor released for the general domestic market.

The AMD Opteron will be aimed at the commercial server market, and recent test results prove very promising.

Recent BIOS updates to the GA-7VAXPU(F4) now include support for the latest 2800 and 3000+ systems.

Picture the size of the heatsink

Get your XP's now, as the price is bound to drop.

    Regards,

    Paul.

I wouldn't get one until other people have got one. Give time for them to get any problems worked out, and especially with the checking of any other software you use...

Is there pricing on them yet?
    Josh
    Get these: Mozilla Opera OpenBSD
I have books for sale: "MCSD in a Nutshell" and "VB Distributed Exam Cram" - PM me for details. Will also trade for a decent ATX Pentium 2 MB/CPU/RAM combo.

Prices aren't available yet, as they are still in the heavy development stage.

It won't be long though until AMD release yet another good CPU to add to their list of excellent products.

Quantispeed at the next level! Can't wait for it!

Thankfully, all our MB's are 7VAXPU's and can be upgraded to a huge extent.

It would be GR8 if Gigabyte and AMD merged. Two of the best companies combined into one trustworthy and cost effective solution for I.T novices through to professionals. We can only hope!

I have just had a look at the predicted prices for the next week or so... and there haven't been any major differences in CPU prices yet... but wait for the adverts on TV & Radio... then they'll drop.

    Regards,

    Paul.

I'm intrigued. How can a board designed for a 32-bit processor possibly use a 64-bit processor to its fullest potential, if at all?

Just got an XP 2000+, and the price was sweeeeeet . Maybe it was just the store though, because it's been at that price for a while ($140 CAD).

I think it'll be a year or two before I get one of these...

    Didn't say it could M8

I said the 7VAXPU could be upgraded to a huge extent... so i can ram 3gb DDR in and not have to worry about buying a new processor.

When they bring out the SIENXPU & 7IENXPU... perhaps i'll think about changing.

I am currently running XP 2700, 1gb DDR PC3200 & 3 x 200Gb's 7200. It works fine ATM, but i've had over nine motherboards in the past 4 months... so i'm bound to change it again.

BTW... XP 2000 are £40 Inc VAT GBP. I don't know what that is in CAD...

    Regards,

    Paul.

Ahhhh. I see. I thought you meant you could stick one of the Opterons into it. Gotcha

    If only i could!

I get all the latest news from Gigabyte before they actually release MB's, so I can judge how they will sell, and if they'll appeal to the market we are aiming at. So as soon as I know of a MB with Opteron / 64 support... i'll letcha know.

    What MB you runnin' M8?

    Regards,

    Paul.

P.S Like the location sub in your list ... which motorway though, i thought they were all snowed under!

Abit KR7A-RAID with an Athlon XP 1800+ Been fantastic for me, solid as a rock under both Win2K and GNU/Linux (where I am at the moment).

As for x86 64-bit chips, it'll take some convincing for me to pick one over a MIPS or SPARC

Nice board that! I had it some time ago, and it was great. As you say... pretty damn stable although obviously prefer Gigabyte.

I know you hadn't guessed that... so I thought i'de mention it!

What FSB you running BTW... mine's capable of 333, although it seems to be running at 133???

Oh well... it's probably just mis-configured! Wasn't my fault though! *Paul has a distinct gold ring above his head*

    Regards,

    Paul.

Heh. We never get anything wrong Running at 266 here (DDR). The board was a recommendation of one of the other members here (chenko), as was most of the stuff in this

Thanks RE location, it's a track from the DJ Shadow album "Private Press"

    It's wierd...

Its DDR PC2700 333FSB and yet progs like MadOnions PC & 3dMark 2001 mark it as 133!!!

Just downloaded the most awesome skin for WinAMP. It's called MMD3. Really, really nice. I'm going to whip it on systems before it's sold.

Had a customer ring me yesterday @ 11:45pm GMT, damn fool! Quarter to midnight and he calls to find out what an EMM driver failure was! I told him he PSU was about to blow and to switch it off straight away!!! Twit believed me Selfish moron.

Anyway... nice talkin' to you M8, but i'm cream crackered and going to bed.

i hope the Athlon 64 motherboards start using some higher-strength plastic for the heat sink clips though...

    or else...

    Too Right!

Get a 3 clip heatsink, it's increases performance as you shouldn't get a bad contact between CPU & Heatsink.

    Paul.
