    direct sound

    What are the advantages of using Direct Sound for playing music files over simply using the API function?

    3D, effects, hardware support, etc. But Directsound will only play WAV files, you may want to use FMOD (fmod.net), a free sound library that allows you to play OGGs and tracked music too (it uses DSound for output if you want it to).
