Hi all, we seem to have an awful lot on this forum about how to manipulate graphics and textures, but what we seem to be lacking is some information on where exactly newbies can learn how exactly to create textures that look any good. So I thought I would start a thread all about custom making graphics and textures. Is there anyone who can tell me of some good programs for creating bitmap textures and graphics, and are there any special techniques or skills involved with creating them?
I hope this is the right place for this post, and that we can get some useful information here for newbies like me,

well...you can allways find the full version on Direct Connect or Kazaa, but thats illegal (if you care )
Otherwise there should be a demoversion out there somewhere.
You can download a 30-day trial from Adobe. If you decide you like it, you can buy it. I believe it retails for about $500 USD (it's a pretty hefty package, but worth it). I don't have that much money though
You can also create GREAT textures with Jasc's Paint Shop Pro. It has a 60-day evaluation, and a bonus with the evaluation is that you get a never-expiring Animation Shop 3 (a very basic GIF/AVI manipulator). This is what I use, I think you can get it for about $50 USD.

If you want a sample of textures made with PSP7, here is an ice texture for the game 'Times of War' some others and I are working on. You can't use it for that reason, but it should give you some ideas.

I use Paint shop pro 5 and it's really good, so I guess version 7 will be a lot better still. I should really get round to upgrading sometime.

hey definitely these are the most widely used tools for making textures and graphics for games. I want to know what tools are good for making 3D models for gaming. Like q3 maybe we could
make animations b4hand and just play them in the game. I heard of 3ds max and got its demo but i think its too poorly documented plus its way expensive. i got certain freewares also but they simply s***. I also tried bryce 5 which doesnt seem to be able to make meshes. btw what are meshes and how can i make those in 3ds max and bryce 5 (demo for 3ds max). I was looking for such a post but now that it has been started , what abt answerin' mine.
3DS Max is the industry leader. Blender, a pretty good freeware app, can do most of the things 3DS Max can do. However, Max has more plugins than Blender and has a larger user community.

I personally use The GIMP, which is freeware (gimp.org , I imagine). This is the standard linux graphics package, though there is a windows version (which I also use =).
BTW Zaei, Jorj and I have come up with an ingenious way for making textures, that requires nearly nothing to be stored on the disk (read: real-time tex. gen).
Go to the thread, I'm about to post on the subject
