Nameservers question

Now, I understand that first you register a domain, coffee.com After this, the domain has to point to a nameserver where it will be hosted.

I've been trying to point my domain to ns1.whatever.com, but I keep getting an error

Errors modifying nameservers: Nameserver ns1.whatever.com cannot be registered

What is this 'registered' being talked about?

I have been told that the name server has to be "registered at the register," however I do not know what this means.

Anyone at all?

Yes, the idea is that you need to get your nameservers registered with the root registry for it to work properly on the internet.

Can you describe this 'process'? Any knowledge you may have about this, because I think you're leading in the right direction.

Okay this is what I know:
Your Nameserver must be registered with the root registrar, for .com and .net Verisign, to work properly , and to resolve domains names. This is important becuase you nameservers are supposed to have the authorative records for your domain name including your domain IP address, mail server info etc. Unless and unitl this happens, you are not domain will not resolve properly.

these both different IP addresses right?

Cuz to re-direct your own domain, u need at least two ip addresses (or use its Hostname for the two ip's).

if not u will need to get a DNS provider to forward ur domain name to you (IE DNS2Go.com)

Yes, both should have different IP address.
Your domain name will be having a single IP address, unless and until it is a haevy traffic site. There are many free DNS servers around whose services you ca use. www.mydomain.com , www.zoneedit.com etc.

Yes, they both have different IPs. I'm going to contact my server admins and ask them to do this for me. Thanks again.
