forum application

i wandering where i can download a free and open source web forum application like 'VB Forum' or others run under PHP? 'Coz i wish to setup one for my company product support team. So that our R&D team can be reach by various customer more easily and resolve the reported bug in better way.

I use XOOPS Content Management System to run my website. It's more flexible than most typical forum programs and has lots of support from the member community.

I think that the Hobo's point was that if it's made using PHP, how could the app not be open source. Since PHP is open source. Actually, now that I think about it, I do know of a PHP web app that isn't open source. Take a look at http://www.pmachine.com/ They have different flavors of their prod, depending how how much you want to spend.

I was implying that all php applications are open source, since you can view the source after you obtain a copy of it. If that's not what you're asking, then I'm confused.

All you get is the HTML..... not originating PHP code. PHP itself is open source, but what you do with it can be copyrighted, trademarked and sold. Just because something was created using PHP does not make the app open source.

try again. I got 5 folders with nothing but php scripts in it.

it is still open source, it all depends on the license that comes with it.

but you have to downlaod tphp scripts to get the software don't ya?

Because of the fact that I can open it up and view the source (of any PHP script, not PHP itself) means that anything made in PHP is open source. I can open the source. Maybe I don't understand the definition of open source...

maybe not

open source means you can modifiy it to any means as long as you leave the author's name in it some where. and/or you tell them what you did or ask permission to do so, and leave the info he supplied up at the top there. also you have to supply the user (he who downloaded it) the license for the GNU license agreement.

if it is copywritten then you are not suppose to modify it at all.

Hi,

I am a new user.

I have been running different php/mysql based forums for quite some time now.

I can personally recommend phpbb, this can be found at
phpbb

They have a great community so if you ever get stuck (like I did) they will be more than happy to help you out.

The forum is very very easy to work with, If you do not wish to do much hard coding that is ok, as phpbb has a very easy install script, it is all based on templates so making it look the way you want it to will be very easy with a good image editing suite and a good imagination.

Another board I have had limited experience with is Invisionboard ( Invisionboard ) this has some very useful features that some other forums do not yet have, like Moderator logs.

I have found that some of the opensource bulletin boards, such as phpbb, can be as good as some of the high-end & expensive forums, and because it is opensorce it will always keep evolving and getting better and progressing.

I currently have a forum based on phpbb, if you wish me to post the link I would be more than happy, as long as it is ok with the admins/mods.
