getting started with games...

im getting pretty good with VB, can make all the apps i need to now, and i wanna move on to the challenge - games. I wanted to know what is a good game to start on so i can get the feel for game programming? I want to eventually create a 3d MMORPG
but i know i have a long way to go. Any suggestions on how to get started?

if you're the type that likes to build everything from the ground up, i reccommend the bare minimum for graphics: direct pixel memory access. see attached file.

if not, here's a really good 2d directx engine
