search engine is a pain
Man the search engine is a pain.
I wish you could search an exact phrase.
like by using quotes (" ") around your search string.
I'm having a hard time searching 2 words together.
Joining words together with AND or * doesn't seem to work.
It would be nice if we could get some more advances search options.
I'm sure a lot of people post messages because they have a hard time searching for something. That something they're searching for might already have been talked about somewhere on the forums. The problem being they just can't find what they're looking for, even though its out there.

Version 3 of vBulletin is supposed to have much more advanced search options. We'll just have to wait for it.

The version of vBulletin that we use is v2.2.7 while the latest released version is v2.2.9. I believe that we will be switching to that version in the near future. I don't think that that version will change the search engine because the documentation on v2.2.9 only says that it "includes several bug-fixes, and also a few small security fixes". v3.0 is apparently in beta test and while I assume that we will eventially go to it after it becomes stable, I have no idea when that might be.

I know this has been said before, but the search is really crap. Why do you have to have at least 3 search terms? And when I enter more than three it still comes up with the same message anyway

What do you mean by "you have to have at least 3 search terms??
What message?

I believe you misread it. It says you must have at least 3 characters in a search term for it to search. It weeds out searches for posts that contain stuff like "to" and "or" and the like. That would put a big strain on the server and take ages to load the results.

If you want to search for a two-character string like IP, you can do something like IP*address.

Marty, just wondering...
if a thread contained the text:
He j ipped me and took my address.
Would "IP*address" return that thread?

Yup. I just did a search (like you could have done immediately after you posted ) and it returned your post from this thread.
