    P4 Underclocked [RESOLVED]

Why is my brand new P4 2.4 GHz Laptop reporting an internal clock speed of 1.8 GHz?

The name string (which is just text) says 2.4, but both rt click properties and a utility I have say that the speed is 1.8 GHz ...

    WHats up with that?

    Speedstep most likely.

Run something CPU intensive and it should ramp itself up to speed.

My 1.6 downclocks to 1.2Ghz when the going is easy.

well ... digitalerror came closest ...

There is a problem with the laptop (same problem with 2 new laptops actually). The manufacturer is crossshipping 2 new boxes ... hope they work.

Glad I noticed it ... kinda hard to believe that 2 laptops could get through QA like that ...

    siyan, i think you're closer....

All laptops with speedstepping will show a lower Mhz rate than the CPU max, that's what there designed to do... saves on battery power. Run Microscope through it... and that will tell you exactly what the processor is.... alternatively, flash the BIOS, incase it's thats why it's showing lower. I had a Dell Inspiron 8100 a few months ago with the same problem... that turned out the be the bios revision.

I'm not saying there is no other fault... but speedstepping is usually the case with new laptops.

    Regards,

    Paul.

definitly not speed step as this is a desktop processor (not mobile even though this is a laptop). THe Intel Freq ID utility shows 1.79 (expected 2.4) even with CPU intensive apps running.

how do you "flash the BIOS"?

    THanks for all the responses.

    depends on the manufacture...

Every manufacture has different ways they recommend you flash the bios.... some use Dos, some use windows & some use both... ie Gigabyte.

Goto your manufactures website and search for your model no, and see if there are any flash updates available.

They will also guide you through the process step by step. If you get it wrong, kiss goodbye to your PC, unless it has dual BIOS.

If the manufacture has told you to leave it and wait for a replacement... i strongly recommend you do that. If you flash the system, correctly or incorrectly... they will always find a way around funding a new laptop.

    Regards,

    Paul

got the new boxes in! clock speed tests OK now!

who woulda thunk that youd have to check that on a brand new box ...
